History Of The Rolling Stones
The history of the Rolling Stones is a long story ... but briefly, the group was formed way back in 1962 ... when Keith Richards and Mick Jagger joined
two fellow musicians Brian Jones and Ian Stewart.
How well do you know the Rolling Stones history? Check out the
Rolling Stones trivia page.
Bill Wyman played bass guitar and Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts rounded out the 5 piece. As time went on, Jagger and Richards
became the band leaders and as people left, they and Charlie Watts were joined by Ronnie Wood in 1974.
The bands name came from a song by Muddy Waters called Rolling Stone. When The Stones played their first gig outside of their local
London area, they shared equal billing with a band called The Hollies .. (you may have heard of them?).
Since then of course The Stones have sold several hundred million albums, been inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989, and have been the
longest group to stay together in the history of Rock and Roll.
The band made an appearance in 1964 on The Dean Martin Show, but their long hair hippie image was not something that
Dean Martins audience embraced. Coupled with the fact there was no such thing as the Rolling Stones greatest hits yet, made for a tough
tour to say the least.
But later in 1964 the band made it onto the Ed Sullivan Show and caused quit a stir as the younger
generation were excited. BTW, the bands first International hit was "Satisfaction" back in Jun 1965.
In 1969 the members of the Rolling Stones became known as the greatest rock and roll band in the world ... and to this day, not a truer label
could be given to this group. The longevity of more than 40 years is remarkable considering all of the changes in music
thru the decades .. but The Rolling Stones hits just kept coming.
Many books and DVDs have been produced over the years to capture what the Rolling Stones biography impact has
had on music and culture. Many youll find available within this leg of the website.
