Green Day formed in 1987 and consisted of Billie Joe Armstrong on vocals, guitar, Mike Dirnt on bass guitar, vocals and Tre Cool on drums, percussion, vocals.

The band hails from East Bay California, which I have to admit, when I first saw these guys I was under the impression they were from a European origin.

The band released their first major album in 1994 called Dookie after switching from the Lookout label to the Reprise label. Many fans thought this was a sellout, but the band did what they thought was best.

They became known for their California Punk sound and with the release of Dookie, they broke into the limelight.

The name for the band, Green Day, came from a fondness with the drug marijuana. The original band name was going to be Sweet Children.

Green Day had 3 #1 hits with their first major album release with Dookie, which only took 3 weeks to record the entire album. With the release of subsequent albums they have won numerous other awards. The bands next album, 21st Century Breakdown, comes out 15th May 2009.
