Here is a bit of background information on Simon and Garfunkel.
The duo have been a driving force in pop and folk music since 1957 when the duo teamed up and began spreading their unique
sound across American and globally. But they had known each other since elementary school and performed in a school play together.
They moved thru junior high and then senior high together as friends and began to write songs. While in High School they had their
first record release in 1957 and it broke into the Billboard top 50 ... selling 100,000 copies. When the duo left high school,
they went on to separate colleges.
Over the next few years the folk scene got into their blood, and when they re-united, Simon had written a few folk
compositions ... but their attempt with that first folk album entitled Wednesday Morning 3AM, was not a success.
A Flop Ignites The Spark
Strangely enough, after the flop of the album, Paul Simon headed for London England and worked as a solo artist and songwriter
for other artists. During his absence, radio DJ's started getting requests for a song from that failed album ... the song
was "The Sound Of Silence".
After some over-dubbing by their producer with electric guitars, drums etc .. the song was
re-released in a different format from the original ... and that change took the song to #1 on New Years Day 1966
while Simon was in Denmark.
I wont give away all of the details here, but they had much success over the years in spite of the many
setbacks and breakups. They have reunited for various special music events, much to the delight of their
large fan base. But in spite of all of their success, they only ever produced three #1 hit singles on Billboards Hot 100.
They were "Mrs Robinson" , "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "The Sound Of Silence".
