Nights In White Satin Album From The Moody Blues

Nights In White Satin is the 2nd album released by The Moody Blues in 1967 entitles "Days Have Passed". It was a long song for it's time being over 7 minutes in length. Long songs as singles never really became the norm until the 1970's.

So despite it's #19 ranking in 1967 in the UK the song went thru subsequent re-releases in 1972 peaking at #9 in the UK and #1 in the US and Canada. It was also re-released later in the UK in 1979 reaching #14.

Just as a side note, The London Festival Orchestra did actually appear in the intro and outto of the song but keyboardist Mike Pinder recreated some of that same sound in the main body of the song.

Kirby Style

The song starts in Em and moves to D, C , G , F and back to Em during the verses. In the Ch the chords are A, C, Em and D. Other chords you'll need are a B7, A and Am.

For the break in this I followed the whistle as best I could but as I mention in the instructional tutorial, this can be played on the two botton strings to stay in the correct pitch. I choose to play it however on the D and A strings mainly as you'll see in my demo. How to play this is fully explained in the tutorial.

Rhythm Pattern For Nights In White Satin By The Moody Blues

Nights In White Satin Single

This song have three separate pattens for rhythm when you look at it. You can play this one for the verses ... dn-dn-dn-up-dn-up-dn-up with the last four being a quick shuffle and then change chord from the Em to the D and simply repeat.

The second pattern is all down-strokes and can be blended with the above pattern in various places in the song such as the chorus and the last verse, where Im playing all down strokes.

And finally the third pattern is a quick dnupdnupdnupdnup etc in the short break between the last two verses. This is basically a count of 8 and then jump right to the A chords.
