Have we heard Mellencamps last top 10 hit? Perhaps .... one cannot go on forever creating hit songs and being in the top 10 or even top 40.

And keep in mind that commercial radio has many more artists to choose fro these days, and the station's taste in new music is likely different than what John Mellencamp produces.
