Jim Croce began his career in music in Philadelphia as a disc jockey. He converted to Judaism after his got married and he and his wife performed as a duo in the mid 60's and early 70's.

At a local steakhouse in Lima Penn, he got a full time gig and had a set ist of over 3000 songs ... his audience never had a boring evening of the same songs.

After a short failed career start wife his wife and selling all of his guitars to pay the bills except one, he returned to Philly and drove truck and worked construction jobs.

Eventually he signed a 3 record deal in 1970 after making a few connections. On Sep 20th, 1973 one hr after finishing a concert and enroute via plane to his next show, the pilot never cleared the end of the runway and hit a tree, killing himself, Croce and 3 other passengers instantly.

A Later investigation blamed the tragic accident on the pilot suffering a heart attack upon takeoff. Croce was 30 when he died and his guitar player that you see in most clips with Jim, Maury Muehleisen, was also killed in the same plane crash. Maury was 24 and the tragedy happened just before the release of "I Got A Name".
