James Taylor was born in Boston but grew up in Carrboro, North Carolina. Although Taylors farther was the dean of a Medical School, Taylor himself dropped out of school to pursue a career in music.

While living in New York City in those early days, Taylor became a heroine addict and was rescued one evening by his father who drove from Chapel Hill North Carolina to pick up his son.

Late in 1969 Taylor was involved in a motorcycle accident and broke both of his hands. He was back to playing a few months later.

He was once married to folk singer Carley Simon. They divorced and Taylor later married actress Kathryn Walker whom he credit finally helping him overcome his substance abuse. But in 2001 he married Caroline ("Kim") Smedvig.

Taylor is currently writing what will likely be his last album. He is now 60.
