Jimmy Buffet said he wrote this song after watchng a drunk businessman trying to pick up a hooker in Atlanta. So he put the song, which was done in one take, on his 1973 album called A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean.

The song became the B-side single to the song "The Great Filling Station Holdup", which was Jimmy Buffett's very first single. The record became very popular in bars with jukeboxes.

Just to be clear, "Why Dont We Get Drunk And Screw" did not chart. "The Great Filling Station Holdup" was the A side single and peaked at #58. Get Drunk And Screw was a popular concert song however.



Ive choosen to play this song in D and with Drop D tuning. The chords you'll need are D, G, E7, D7 and A7. Im also using a bit of a slide on the A7 by doing a walk on the A# Cb and C notes. Also when you're playing the D chord you can do a life off of the fretboard withthe index and middle finger as you'llsee e do in a few plces.

This follows a pretty standard country pattern in country strumming which is note-dn-up-bassnote-up-dn-up. The first bar is the note, the second bar isthe dn-up .. the third bar is the bassnote and the fourth bar is the up-dn-up.

I prefer using drop D in songs like this because it gives a nice deep bass note to the song on the D chord.
