How To Play What Is Life

With the release of What Is Life as a single in 1971, George Harrison became the first member of The Beatles to score a top 10 hit after their break-up.

The song hails from the album All Things Must Pass, which itself was a first because it was a triple album. What Is Life did reach #1 in Switzerland. A few covers were done of the song, most notibly by Olivia Newton John in 1972.

In 1969 Harrison wrote What Is Life for singer and entertainer Billy Preston ... but then decided not to offer it to him because Harrison didn't feel it was right for Preston because of the change in Prestons music at that time.

While this album was being recorded, it featured some pretty impressive talent including... Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, Maurica Gibb, Eric Clapton, Gary Wright and Phil Collins just to name a few. Harrison had been quietly writing songs since the mid 1960's, which explains where all of this material suddenly came from right after The Beatles break-up.

How To Play Rhythm For What Is Life

George Harrison What Is Life

In the verses for this song I work in a bit of the picking pattern using all down strokes. This is where that drop D tuning comes in. When I get to the chorus I use a steady up and down shuffle pattern to help make the song sound a bit fuller.

I do play this song a bit lower than the original key, which is E. As you can see, Im playing it in D.
