On this page I'd like to explain to you how to play Soul Man by Sam And Dave. Check out my acoustic
demo clip and grab some free tabs in the lower right hand menu.
Soul Man was a song written in 1967 by Issac Hayes and David Porter and recorded by the duo known as
Sam And Dave and it became a #1 hit for them on the Billboard Hot 100 Black Singles Chart and #2 on the Hot
100 Chart.
Cover versions were done by several acts including James Brown in 1974 and The Blues Brothers in 1979. Ted Nugent
and Prince often perfromed the song attheir live concerts.
Im not sure if this song is one that should be done acoustically in front of an audience as a solo but I thought
I'd give it a shot as it was requested by many. I personally wouldn't play this song as a single act, but that's
just me ... lol.
How To Play Soul Man by Sam And Dave Kirby Style
This song starts out in G then moves to F, A#, C and D. Later on the song moves up a fret so at that point
you'll need D#, A#, C, C# and D# and finally a G# til the end.
There isnt any picking pattern in this one but there are a few sliding chords and hammer-ons in a few spots
which I fully explain in the full instructional video tutorial.

How To Play Rhythm For Soul Man
The right hand on this one moves in a steady up and down motion as the left hand moves thru a few variations
using the G chord. When we get to the chorus, the rhythm move to down strokes until you hit the F chord and then
it becomes a shuffle pattern again. When we get to the C chord it again goes into down stroke mode.
When the song changes key, it's pretty much a steady shuffle pattern. The intro and the repeat of it on the
key change as you'll see in the demo is just a sequence of slides between chords.
