How To Play Seven Spanish Angels
By Willie Nelson

On this page I'll go into some detail on how to play Seven Spanish Angels by Willie Nelson on the acoustic. I also have an instructional demo video clip on this page and free lyrics and tabs that should also be beneficial.

Seven Spanish Angels By Willie Nelson

Seven Spanish Angels was recorded as a duet by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson in 1984. For Charles, it was his most successful country song and the song peaked at the #1 position for one week in 1984. Troy Seals and Eddie Steser wrote the song.

You'll find this song on Willie Nelson's 1985 album called "Half Nelson", which was a duet album that he recorded with the likes of Merle Haggard, George Jones, Ray Charles, Carlos Santana, Julio Iglesias, Neil Young, Hank Jr, Mel Tillis and Lacy J Dalton.

The album peaked at #10.

As one commenter said when watching this clip, you'd have to be almost brain dead not to feel some emotion when listening to this song being performed by these two giants. Check out the clip in the right hand menu.

There are only a handful of chords in this song which include D, A7, D7 and G with a drop D tuning. You'll also notice I'm playing this with a capo on the 3rd.

I made up a bit of a picking riff which is covered in detail in the full instructional tutorial from the link below.

Rhythm For How To Play Seven Spanish Angels By Willie Nelson
Kirby Style

As far as rhythm goes, as you can see it's pretty much a steady dn-up-dn-up-dn ... up-dn-up-dn-up-dn-up ... (repeat both) for the intro. I have the (3 dots) to indicate a slight pause. Once you start singing on the D chord you can use dndnupdndn-updnupdnupdnup (change chord on the next dn) and do the same pattern.

Sometimes these songs are more of a "feel" then they are an exact strum pattern because I could be playing a slightly different pattern in the next verse and you likely wouldn't even notice. Use what I have listed here or in the instructional tutorial as a guide ... feel out the best way to play this one for you.
