How To Play I Heard It Through The Grapevine By CCR

This great tune was written in 1966 and first recorded by Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Marvin Gaye. By 1970, CCR took a stab at this with two version. A short version, which they recorded in D#. And a long 10 min version which they recorded in D.

Of the many versions of this song however, Marvin Gaye had the most success. CCR did not release this song as a single until 1976 where it peaked at #43 in the US and #10 in The Netherlands.

The song was also featured in a series of Raisin commercials many years ago. Remember that? But I believe it was the Marvin Gaye version. And of course over the years many artists and bands put their spin on the song.

CCR plays this in D, but because of John Fogerty's high vocal range, I had to sing this low.. so for that reason, D is too low of a key. But with a capo on the 2nd fret, and usong drop D tuning, Im singing this in E ... but still low, vocally. Something to consider if you don't have the pipes to sing it in the original key.

The crords on this one are as follows ... D, A, G and a Bm. With the drop D tuning, this allos you to do a slide on the top 3 strings from the 3rd to the 2nd and then open.

How To Play Rhythm For I Heard It Through The Grapevine

CCR Heard It Through The Grapevine

There are 2 different rhythm patterns in this one. The first is all down strokes for the intro with a bit of a mute of the strings with the right hand. Once you start singing, you can use a dn-up-slap-up-dn-up-slap etc.

You'll notice that the pattern does a quick jump when moving to the G chord.

And in the chorus the chords jump quickly ... so watch for that.

The picking break is fully explained in the full instructional tutorial. It sounds like a bit thin when moving up on the 12th and 14th fret by yourself, but not much one can do with this.
