On this page I'd like to explain to you how to play Della And The Dealer by Hoyt Axton. Check out my acoustic
demo clip and grab some free tabs in the lower right hand menu.
Hoyt Axton was from Oklahoma and was probably better known for the songs others recorded of his than for his top positions he held
at the top of the charts himself. It's not like songwriting wasn't in his blood. His mother, Mae Axton, co-wrote Elvis Presley's first hit
Heartbreak Hotel.
Some well known bands had great success with Hoyt Axton songs such as Three Dog Night with "Joy To The World" and "Never Been To Spain" as did Steppenwolf
with "Snowblind Friend" and "The Pusher" as well as Ringo Starr with "No No Song" and many others.
Axton himself never recorded any #1 hits himself. His
best performance on the charts was with a song he wrote called "Boney Fingers", which peaked at #8 in 1974.
The song featured here on this page called "Della And The Dealer" reached #17 back in 1979 from the album Rusty Old Halo. It's about Della and her
crooked Dealer friend and a dog and cat heading to Tuscon to make some fast money. They get hooked up into a bar where the guitarist starts flirting from
the stage with Della an her jealous dealer friend kinda puts an end to that before they flee town in a hurry.
How To Play Della And The Dealer by Hoyt Axton Kirby Style
Hoyt Axton had a deep bass voice, so trying to sing this in the original key is a bit too low for me. So I moved it to the D chord.
other chords are G, F, A# and A.
Im using one picking riff in this one after the sections where the chorus repeats itself. I explain all
of this in the full instructional tutorial.
Hoyt Axton died of a heart attack on Oct 26 1999 from a heart attack. His mother Mae also died of a heart attack 2 years earlier and drowned in her
hot tub. She was 82.
I start this one with a picking riff and then launch into the one rhythm pattern that can be used throughout the entire song. You can use the standard
country pattern of note-dn-up-note-up-dn-up and repeat that all thru the song.
