Bob Dylan Blowing In The Wind

Bob Dylan wrote the lyrics to "Blowing In The Wind" in 1962 in about 10 minutes. The melody of the song however he did not write. He admitted that the melody comes from an old spritual song called "No More Auction Block."

This was a former slave song that apparently originated in Canada and was sung after slavery was abolished in 1833 by the British.

Originally Dylan only had two verses to this song but added a third verse later on. They have been changed around over the years by various performers. It was played a plenty during the 1960's because it became known as the civil rights protest song.

Blowing In The Wind was first recorded by The Chad Mitchell Trio, who were a folk trio that played no instruments and made satrical fun of the events of the day during the 1960's. But because the word "death" was in the song, the record release was delayed.

And then along comes Peter, Paul and Mary and sold one million copies with their version. Talk about great timing.
