How To Play Always On My Mind
By Willie Nelson

On this page Id like to explain to you how to play Always On My Mind by Willie Nelson.

Always On My Mind Willie Nelson

This song has been recorded by well over 300 artists since it was first published back in 1972. Brenda Lee was the first to release a recording which made it to #45 on the charts.

A bit later that same year, Elvis Presley released his version as a B side to Seperate Ways and it peaked at #16. In the UK, the A-side and B-side was flipped and Always On My Mind was the A-side.

But it took Willie Nelson in 1982 to take the song to #1. And the same year, the three writers who composed the song won a Grammy Award for their writing and Willie took home a Grammy also for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. The song went on to win numerous wards and eventually made it into the Grammy Hall Of Fame.

As you'll see there are plently of chords in this song. They are as follows ... G, D/Gb, Em, C, D, Am, A7, D7, B, Dsus, Am/G

The song has a bit of a combination of note picking and strumming. I start of by playing the bass notes and strumming but later I drop the note picking for more of a strum pattern with just the root note of the song. Just a point. When I move from the C to the B note I maintain the C chord formation and play the B string with the baby finger on the 3rd fret ... so technically it's not really a full B chord as listed above.

Rhythm Pattern For Always On My Mind By Willie Nelson

Willie Performing Always On My Mind

You can use all downstrokes for strummimg as you'll see me do in my version for the first little bit of the song follows a note-note-strum-note.... note-note-strum-note pattern.

Once I move out of the first chorus I switch to a note-note-up-dn-up .. note-note-up-dn-up pattern with a slight shuffle on the Dsus. I do something similar on the A7 and a few other spots.

Some picking riffs are included in a few spots which I fully cover in the full instructional tutorial. Grab the free Tabs in the right menu.
