Dream Baby Lyrics

Roy Orbison did not write the song called Dream Baby, but he was sharp enough to recognize a good song when he heard one. And in 1962 he recorded this song which peaked at #4 in the USA and #2 in the UK. It was also a top 5 in many other countries. Bottom line, the song was an International hit.

What is even more astounding is that the song only has 2 chords.

Im playing this song a bit differently in the demo below from the original. Roy's version on stage with Bruce Springsteen, KD Lang and other is played in F and C7. Since I dont have the vocal range that Roy had Im playing in with drop D tuning in A7 and D.

You can use a few walking bass notes moving from the D to the A7 by playing C and B on the A string. And when moving back to the D you can use the C and C# on the A string. With the drop D you can also walk the top string when moving to the A chord of the 4th, 5th, 6th fret and then open A.

Rhythm Pattern For Dream Baby By Roy Orbison

Roy Orbison Dream Baby

The Dream Baby lyrics is extremely "thin" as it's really on 1 verse and 1 chourse that simply repeats. The rhythm pattern is a simple note dn bassnote up dn - note dn bassnote up dn where note=rootnote of the chord and bassnote=the bassnote of the chord you're on.

So while playing the A7, the bass note is E and while playing D the bassnote is A. As you'll notice I do a bit of a slide into the A7 and also on the D chord Im using a D7 as my slide into chord as the song moves forward.

You can also do a muffle with all down strokes as you'll notice later in my version but not required. I also threw in an improvised picking section just to break up the song a bit as well as a slide to end the song. These are covered in detail in the full instructional tutorial.
