Some Background On ABBA and Dancing Queen

One has to wonder how anxious ABBA was to get this song out onto the airwaves. You see the song was recorded in the fall of 1975 but was not released until almost a year later.

The band members of ABBA have said publically that it's often difficult to know when a song is going to be a hit. But with Dancing Queen, they sensed it was going to be a blockbuster ... and it was.

Dancing Queen Lyrics

The first performance of the song was in July of 1976 on Swedish TV on the eve of the wedding between King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Silvia Sommerlath. The whole nation was tuned it.

Remember ABBA already had two successful songs in 1976 with Fernando and Mamma Mia, both $1 hits in the UK.

When the song was finally released in Aug 76 in the UK and Sweeden and in Sep in the US, it shot straight to #1. In fact Dancing Queen went #1 in thirteen countries.

It has been the bands only #1 song in the US.

A Unique Way To Sing The Dancing Queen Lyrics

ABBA sang Dancing Queen once again in 1993 for the Swedish Queens birthday ... but this time without any band, just a capalla. Ever wonder what Dancing Queen sounds like a capalla? You can hear it on Frida The DVD available at some Amazon locations.

Dancing Queen Lyrics Onstage

Channel 4 TV in Britain asked its viewers back in 2000 what was their favorite song of the top 100 #1's at that time. Dancing Queen was voted #4 out of 100.

And of course the song has made it onto many "best songs and top lists" carried out by Rolling Stone magazine, VH1 and others.

Each year at the Christmas ball at the Canadian Royal Military College in Kingston On, they play Dancing Queen after the Commandant has exited the building to indicate "lets party".
