This Bruce Springsteen The River lyrics song hails from Springsteen's 1980 album of the same name. It was never released in the US as a single but was released as such in the European market, peaking at #5 in Norway.

Springsteen said he wrote the song about his brother and sister because of hard times they were going thru in the 70's due to job losses.
