Act Naturally Chords
By Buck Owens

In this article I'd like to explain a few tips covering the Act Naturally Chords by Buck Owens. Below are the Act Naturally lyrics and tab along with a free tutorial explaining how I play this song. This version is from the 1989 duet with Buck Owens and Ringo Starr.

Playing Act Naturally Chords

This song was written by Johnny Russell who was asked by friends to come to LA and help with a recording session. When Johnny's girl asked him why he was breaking their date that evening, he said "they're gonna put me in the movie and make a big star out of me."

So he wrote the song around that line, but it was a full two years before a song writing friend, Voni Morrison, introduced Johnnys song to Buck. He didnt like to song at first, but Don Rich did ... and the Buckaroos took the song to #1 in 1963.

I play this song in E which is the original key of the song. I also use an A7 but many other players will simply play an A maj ... no big deal, take your pick. You'll want to add a B7 and to finish it off, a Gb will be required.

Below is a full version tutorial so you can watch me go thru some bass rhythm along with some hammer-ons as well as a picking segment.

Strumming Act Naturally Chords

When I start this off I go right into the intro hammer-on sequence as shown in the tutorial above. The rhythm should be played as a basic rhythm first, which is simply note-dn-up-note-up-dn-up. Once you get past that, then add some bass notes to the sequence.

The next step in the process is to add in some basic runs between the chords from the E chord to the A chord using the top string at the 2nd and 4th frets. Coming from A to E it's done in reverse at the 4th and 2nd fret.

Moving from E to the B7 involves a quick slide to the 4th fret on the top string followed by an open A, A# then to the B7 chord.

Moving back to the E from the B7 is not the reverse, but instead you start with an open A followed by the top string at the 4th and 2nd to the E maj chord.

Once you get the hang of the rhythm, bass notes, chord change runs and the hammer-ons, you can start studying how to work in some lead. What Ive done here for my demo is not a note for note duplication of the original recording, but just something I put together. You can watch the video above to see what Ive done.

That should do it. I hope you found this page and this tutorial helpful. Feel free to Like It or Tweet out the url of this page to folks you know who might appreciate a free lesson and some tips when playing these Act Naturally chords at their next gig.
